The FRT-RD3™ (AMBI) is specifically engineered to operate with the factory semi-automatic bolt carrier used in the HK MP5, MP5K, SP5, and SP5K roller-delayed pattern firearms. For that reason, the FRT-RD3™ (AMBI) is compatible with models containing factory full-auto carrier denial blocks in the receiver with no modifications needed to the firearm. The FRT-RD3™ (AMBI) provides simple plug and play installation. Please note: The FRT-RD3™ (AMBI) is also compatible with all full-auto bolt carrier groups but one is not required.
Compatibility with the HK MP5/SP5 AMBI Grip Frame
The HK AMBI grip frame is identified by the modern Pictogram markings (often called the “Navy” style). Instead of letters, it uses bullet icons: a white slashed bullet for Safe, a single red bullet for Semi, and (if applicable) multiple red bullets in a box for Burst or Auto. This configuration uses levers on both sides of the frame. The indicator mark is located on the forward-facing radius of the selector axle rather than a pointing tail.

One feature that deserves more attention on the RD3 is the adjustable selector resistance. Being able to change how much resistance you feel moving between positions is a small detail, but it makes the controls feel much more personal. Combine that with the high quality trigger pull in semi and their amazing forced reset mode, along with the fact that Rare Breed is the only company manufacturing FRT’s that has a legal ruling and additional protections provided by their settlement with the government, the FRT-RD3 is a no brainer. You’d have to be slow in the head to buy any other forced reset device. I said what I said.

Unfortunately, I didn’t pay attention to the video on the RD3 webpage that helps explain to knuckleheads like me which trigger I needed to order for my specific grip frame. I ordered the SEF and should have ordered the AMBI so when the trigger showed up I was bummed because it wasn’t right. Totally my fault. I called customer support and they helped me quickly figure out the mismatch and then they got me squared away. After receiving the correct trigger, it was a super quick install and now it runs super smooth. Legit stoked.

I went into this expecting a fun trigger but I now realize the RD3 is not a fun range toy. This trigger is well made and intended for hard use. There is nothing gimmicky about it. It’s all business! What I appreciate about the ambi variant of the RD3 is how cohesive the design feels. The two-stage trigger, three-position selector, and ambidextrous controls all seem to just belong.
That matters on a platform as distinctive as the MP5. Rare Breed managed to introduce an entirely new capability without losing the character of the firearm around it.
It is such an impressive design and one of the few upgrades I’ve seen that genuinely moves the MP5 platform forward.

HK owners can be a picky bunch, and I’m definitely guilty of it. I don’t like putting something on an MP5 that changes the character of the gun just for the sake of adding a feature. That was my biggest concern with the RD3.
Rare Breed nailed the balance. The ambidextrous controls look at home on the platform, the two-stage semi trigger gives the gun a more refined personality, and the trigger as a whole still feels unmistakably like an MP5.
But that 3rd position is AMAZING! I have so much love for the RD3!

The RD3 AMBI is a remarkably thoughtful upgrade to the MP5 platform. The two-stage pull gives semi-auto a level of improvement over the oeM trigger pack, while the ambidextrous selector maintains the familiar HK look and feel. More importantly, the entire mechanism feels cohesive. Nothing about the trigger gives the impression that forced-reset functionality was added as an afterthought.
The third position may be what sells the RD3, but the quality of the standard semi-auto trigger pull is what makes me appreciate it. Rare Breed managed to add an entirely different capability while still producing a trigger I genuinely enjoy using in ordinary semi-auto. That is good engineering, plain and simple.

I also like how they designed in the option to adjust the resistance placed on switching the selector. You can have more or less resistance. I like that. Me and my SP5 are happy with this one.

I had high expectations for this one, and it delivered. Mine is in an HK SP5K. So far it has not given me any reliability problems. The Navy-style ambidextrous levers are easy to reach from either side. The selector clicks are firm and clear. This one is staying in the gun. This trigger is the real deal Holyfield. I dropped it into an MP5, and it fits like a glove. The ambi controls sit right where you want them on the grip frame, and everything feels natural in the hand.
I’ve run it without a single hiccup so far. All three positions are easy to find, and there’s no guessing where you’re at. FRT mode is like the perfect 8 second bull ride of your dreams. And outside of FRT mode, the regular semi-auto trigger pull is a heck of an upgrade on its own. It’s clean, feels good, and makes the gun better all around. I’d do it again faster than two shakes of a lambs tail.

I recently purchased an RD3 for my Century Arms AP5. I was on the fence for a while before finally ordering one. It has been solid from the first day. The AMBI controls feel purpose-built for the MP5/SP5 family. It does not feel like an AR trigger forced into a roller-delayed platform. The trigger movement is smooth and the break is well defined. This trigger lives in an MP5 clone. The trigger has done exactly what I wanted it to do. I got the SEF version of my new FRT-RD3 installed in my PTR and it fits factory-perfect. You genuinely cannot tell it is not OEM just by looking. Then you shoot it and wow. The trigger pull in semi is fresh and so clean clean. It’s honestly better than the factory trigger. And FRT mode is an absolute blast. My buddy has a 3D-printed setup with a super safety and it’s straight trash in comparison. If you’re looking to upgrade, Rare Breed is the only way to go.

All three selector positions felt solid. Semi-auto feels good and FRT mode on the SP5K is incredibly fast and surprisingly controllable. I have recommended this trigger to everyone I shoot with. No one has been disappointed. Worth every penny.

For the last year or so I have been running super safety setups but am sooooo happy that I was turned onto the FRT-RD3. Dropped right into my Century Arms AP5-P with zero fitting required. The trigger pack looks and feels completely factory inside the gun. Semi-auto is much nicer than the OEM. FRT mode is a blast! Ran 400 rounds on the first trip out. Best upgrade I have ever made to an MP5-style platform.

I have three MP5’s and just finished installing an FRT-RD3 in all three. Each one dropped right in without any fitting required. Wanted to ensure all was good so I took them to the range and ran 20 mags total across the three guns. Not a single malfunction. Installed this in my HK SP5 and cannot stop smiling every time I take it to the range. Install took under 10 minutes — drops right into the grip module like it was designed to be there. All three positions function perfectly. Ran it unsuppressed and also with a Rugged suppressor. Both configurations ran perfectly! 600 rounds in and have experienced zero issues. Forced reset mode on the MP5 platform is just filthy. If you have an SP5 or SP5K, this is the single best upgrade you can make. Period.

I own both versions of the FRT-RD3, and I honestly love them equally. My FRT-RD3 (AMBI) is installed in my HK MP5K, and it has been an absolute blast to shoot.

This trigger is amazing! It couldn’t be any better. Since they released it, I have been able to purchase 6. I have one in my Dakota Tactical D54SD and my Dakota Tactical D54R-N. My wife and I both have one in our HK MP5K. And, both of my boys have them in the Century Arms AP5. No problems. No hiccups. They just run. Rare Breed didn’t try to modify a grip frame to accept an AR-15 trigger. They created a special purpose trigger for the MP5 platform and knocked it out of the park! Well done guys! I’m looking forward to see what they do next!

I had been refreshing and refreshing the Rare Breed site for months waiting to get ahold of an FRT-RD3 and finally did. I dropped the trigger pack in my AP5-N. I ran suppressed with a YHMR9 and unsuppressed. 115gr 9mm. In both conditions, it performed flawlessly. I mag dumped a couple of 30 rounders and also did a few magazines of controlled bursts. Took maybe 5 minutes to install my new FRT-RD3. After install did function testing and everything worked as it should. We then took it to the range and put it to work it. Ran 15 mags through it, so nothing too crazy but it was reliable the whole time. It was in a SP5K and was a blast. I was a bit hesitant at first due to the cost but I love how it just dropped right in and worked. Didn’t have to change to an AR lower or do anything extreme. I was surprised by how good trigger felt even in regular semi and how smooth the safety was.

I have three of these and they all work incredibly well. I have an MP5, MP5 K, and MP5K PDW (two suppressed, one not). Other than changing out the locking piece to slow the cyclic rate if desired with a suppressor, there’s really no tuning required it’s pretty much plug and play. This has to be the easiest platform to drop one of these into. And these packs drop right into the HK grip module, even the levers look exactly like the HK levers, so when it’s installed it looks factory.
